FAQs - General Tips and Suggestions on CPAP Therapy

Suggestions to ensure a good night's rest

DO NOT eat a heavy meal before going to bed. Plan meals at least three hours before bedtime.

DO NOT chew gum, candy or cough drops while on the CPAP machine.

DO NOT workout or exercise just before going to bed. Physical exercise increases the body's core temperature. which can inhibit sleep. If you decide to exercise, allow yourself enough time to cool down before going to bed.

DO NOT use petroleum or lip based ointments (Vaseline, Mentholetum, Neosporin) to coat the nasal passages. Lipid based ointments can present complications by creeping into the lungs from the CPAP pressure.

• Drying of the nasal passages is a common side effect of CPAP. To help correct this problem, make sure you plenty of water during the day (at least 6 to 8 cups of water).

If dryness persists, a humidification system is easy to use and can be purchased here on CPAP Station.

• If you require a mouth guard or mouthpiece while sleeping, consult your physician concerning its proper use with CPAP therapy.

• If you experience any stomach discomfort or pain, contact your physician.

• Try to wake up and go to sleep at the same time each day to help establish a routine for normal sleep.

DO NOT use over-the-counter nasal spray prior to using the CPAP unit. If you suffer from sinus congestion, consult your physician. It is acceptable to use a saline solution or a commercial spray such as "Ocean Spray".

• If you use a room humidifier, set it at least six feet away from your CPAP unit to prevent water damage in the CPAP machine.

• Make sure to follow the recommended cleaning schedule.

Setting up your CPAP unit

• Be sure your CPAP unit is on a firm foundation above the floor. This limits the amount of lint and dust pulled into the CPAP unit.

• Never place the unit in a position that blocks the air inlet port. A blocked port will lead to less airflow through the unit and can overheat the CPAP unit.

• Always plug the CPAP unit into a three-prong negative ground outlet. If a grounded outlet is not available, use an adapter. If an extension cord is required, only use an extension cord with a surge protector.

Before going to bed

• Wash your face before putting on the CPAP mask. Natural body oils, face creams and makeup will cause the CPAP mask to wear out faster.

• Turn the CPAP unit “ON” to assure proper operation. Airflow through the tubing should be constant. If you are using the delay/ramp option, flow will be less at first and reach the prescribed pressure after the set period of time.

• Adjust the facemask to a snug fit, but make sure not to over-tighten the head straps.

• Only use water-based creams or lotions at night.

• Use only nasal sprays recommended by your physician.
